Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic non˗communicable disease that is characterized by hyperglycaemia, which can result from a lack of insulin secretion by the pancreatic β˗cells or from target tissues becoming insensitive to insulin. The diabetic kidney disease (Diabetic Nephropathy) is a microangiopathic manifestation of diabetes occurring in about 30% of patients and it is the most common cause of end˗stage kidney disease. Beet root is a root vegetable and a rich source of phytochemical compounds that includes anthocyanins, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, phenolic acids, flavonoids, polyphenols, polysaccharides, folic acid, pectin, saponins, vitamins and minerals. Beet root is also one of the few vegetables that contain a group of highly bioactive pigments known as betalains and is known to be a powerful antioxidant. Beet root possess hypoglycemic activity and the juice of beet root is used as a popular folk remedy for the treatment kidney diseases. In recent years, beet root has gained popularity to be a natural food to boost the antihypertensive, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, anti˗inflammatory and hepatoprotective activities. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate the effect of beet root juice and pomace powder for improving the health status of nephropathy diabetic rats. Forty eight adult male albino rats, weighing (180 ± 3g) of Sprague Drawly strain, were fed the standard diet for one week then divided into two main groups as follows: First main group: Normal control (n= 6) rats were fed on the standard diet only. Second main group: Nephropathy diabetic rats (n= 42) Nephropathy diabetic rats were divided into 7 subgroups (6 rats each) according the following: • Subgroup 1: Rats fed the standard diet only as positive control. • Subgroup 2: Rats fed the standard diet and were given a daily oral dose 5 µl/g body weight of beet root juice for 60 days. • Subgroup 3: Rats fed the standard diet and were given a daily oral dose 10 µl/g body weight of beet root juice for 60 days. • Subgroup 4: Rats fed the standard diet and were given a daily oral dose 15 µl/g body weight of beet root juice for 60 days. • Subgroup 5: Rats fed the standard diet containing 2.5% of beet root pomace powder for 60 days. • Subgroup 6: Rats fed the standard diet containing 5% of beet root pomace powder for 60 days. • Subgroup 7: Rats fed the standard diet containing 7.5% of beet root pomace powder for 60 days. |
