Abstract

Oral mucositis is a serious dose limiting complication of chemo-radiotherapy Also, severe mucositis can significantly interferes with malignant disease management and patient survival rates, as it often results in interruption of therapy, secondary infection and sepsis .The aim of this study is to determine the value of extended oral care using a various techniques of dental rehabilitation to decrease or prevent the severity of mucositis in ALL children during the induction phase of chemotherapeutic agent versus the standard oral care and to determine the relationship between OM and other risk factors such as thrombocytopenia and neutropenia Patient and method :A randomized controlled trial was conducted to determine the effect of dental rehabilitation on preventing or decreasing the severity of mucositis for patients of acute lymphoblastic leukemia receiving induction course of chemotherapy 50 ALL children during the induction chemotherapy divided in to :group A: 25patients were subjected to limited oral care (chlorohexidine mouth wash at least 3 times /day every day and tooth brushing twice daily as the following :•Chlorohexidine mouth wash and teeth brushing using A non-irritant toothpaste•group B: 25 patients were subjected to extended oral care which includes: chlorohexidine mouth wash at least 3 times /day every day , tooth brushing twice daily and dental rehabilitation (teeth extraction and filling). The main result of this study : Although there is no statistically significant reduction in the grades of oral mucositis among the extended oral care group in comparison with the standard oral care group but it was observed that decreasing grade 3 of oral mucositis in patients of extended oral care group, also no patients develop grade 4 oral mucositis among the extended oral care group . Also no significant difference was noted regarding the duration of mucositis between the extended oral care group and in the standard oral care group. Neutropenia and thrombocytopenia were identified as risk factors for mucositis, which were negatively correlated with the degree of mucositis.
