Abstract

This study reveals a linguistic stylistic analysis for Paul Beatty’s novel The Sellout through using Leech’s linguistic checklist. The study embodies two chief goals; a linguistic goal that depends on applying Leech’s Linguistic checklist on the entire novel by utilizing its different categories and a literary aim that relies on exposing the issue of racial segregation in the American society between the Whites and the Blacks. The proficiency in a writing style that Beatty displays in his novel is embodied evidently via this study, which assures his creativity and cleverness in using the language to present his thoughts obviously.
The study may produce a new classification for Leech’s Linguistic checklist in analyzing literary works from the linguistic point of view. As the research divides the list’s four categories into two main classifications: (a) the first one has the title of “up to the clause level”, which contains lexical and grammatical categories in analyzing and (b) the second one entitled as “above the clause level” that includes figures of speech, cohesion and context. This new division can be applied accordingly to any English literary work to be analyzed linguistically.
