Abstract

Viral hepatitis A is one of the most important diseases that affect school age especially when the children ignore their hygienic practices and have poor sanitary environment.Aim: to assess the perception of primary school students about viral hepatitis A in Port Said city. Design:A cross sectional descriptive design was adopted. Setting: the data collected from five governmental primary schools in Port-Said city namely (Mustafa kamel school,El Tawkelat El Mlahiya school, ElSayeda Khadija school, El Malik Feisal school and Om El Momenen school). Sample: Multi stratified random sample determined a total of two hundred and sixteen (216) primary school students ,100 were males while 116 were females. Tool: The data was collected through self-administered questionnaire. It composed of three parts, the first part includedsocio-demographic characteristics, second part included primary school students’ knowledge about viral hepatitis A and the third partincluded primary school students reported practice regarding viral hepatitis A. Results:It is found that the mean age of the students was 11 years old, 43.1% had knowledge about hepatitis A and there was statistically significant relation between total knowledge of students about viral hepatitis A and their sex. Conclusion: The primary school students had incorrect knowledge regarding viral hepatitis A and the majority of students had satisfactory reported practice regarding viral hepatitis A. Thepositive statistically significant correlation was found between total knowledge and total reported practice of students regarding viral hepatitis A. Recommendations: Designing health education programs for primary school student regarding hepatitis A to reinforce students’ knowledgepractice.
