Abstract
Learning style is various approaches of learning and ways of accepting information. Based on this concept teachers should assess students’ learning style to adapt their teaching methods to fit students’ styles.
This descriptive study is conducted to identify different learning styles of medical students in Cairo and Fayoum universities to assess medical staff members’ awareness about learning styles of students as well as matching of learning /teaching styles.
The sample of the study includes 1001 students, 711 students are from Cairo University and 290 students are from Fayoum University with equal distribution between preclinical (3rd year) and clinical (4th year) grades. For students two questionnaires are used “self administrated structured questionnaire ”, and ”learning assessment inventory (VARK) questionnaire”. For university staff members self administrated structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews are used.
The results of the study reveals that the majority of students are multi-style (tri and quadric-style) and most of university staff members are (uni-and bi-style) with significance difference between them (p = 0.01).
It is clear from these results that there is a gap between students and teacher styles, this finding indicate the need for a new approach to match learning /teaching Styles and to improve medical education in both Cairo and Fayoum universities.
