Abstract

Esophageal varices is a potentially life-threatening complication of portal hypertension. Gastroesophageal varices have been seen in approximately 50%- 60% of patients with cirrhosis of the liver.
The aim of this study was to assess the predictors of esophageal varices in cirrhotic patients and to evaluate the role of NIHCED score and right lobe diameter to albumin ratio as non-invasive predictors of presence of varices in patient with liver cirrhosis.
This study was conducted on 75 adult cirrhotic patients. After signing a written informed concent, all patients were submitted to clinical assessment, laboratory, radiological investigations, and upper endoscopy. The following were calculated (Child’s score, NIHCED score, and right lobe diameter to albumin ratio, caudate lobe diameter).
In our study, we found that low platelet count, low serum albumin, splenomegaly, ascites, caudate lobe hypertrophy and collaterals were good non-invasive predictors for the presence of OVs in cirrhotic patients.
We also found that NIHCED score and right lobe diameter to albumin ratio were associated with the presence of OVS in cirrhotic patients.
In conclusion: low platelet count, low serum albumin, splenomegaly, ascites, caudate lobe hypertrophy, collaterals were good non-invasive predictors for the presence of OVs in cirrhotic patients. The NIHCED score and right lobe diameter to albumin ratio were simple non-invasive predictors of presence of varices in patient with liver cirrhosis.
