Abstract

Background: Cue-based care is the key element in the provision of developmentally appropriate care as it based on observing behavioral cues of preterm infants to collect information concerning each preterm infant’s competencies, vulnerabilities, and thresholds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of implementing a practice based guidance module about the behavioral cues exhibited from preterm infants on nurses’ knowledge and their interventions towards the expressed cues. Design: A quasi-experimental design (pre / post-test) was utilize. Settings: the study was carried out at the neonatal intensive care units affiliated to Mansoura University Children’s Hospital, Mansoura General Hospital and the New General Hospital, Egypt. Subjects: A convenience sample of all nurses (n= 91), who were available during the period of data collection recruited to achieve the aim of the study. Tools: Data were collected using a structured questionnaire sheet and observational checklists. Results: the study results revealed statistical significance differences in nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding identifying the behavioral cues exhibited from preterm infants; pre, immediate post and at follow up of the study module implementation. Conclusion: The study module had a positive effect on nurse’s knowledge and practice about behavioral cues exhibited from preterm infants after module implementation than before its implementation. Recommendations: Emphasize on the importance of conducting periodical on-Job training for nurses about behavioral cues exhibited from preterm infants as well as newly appointed nurses about the current concept of cue based care for preterm infants.
