Abstract

Healthwas defined as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 1947).
In May 1984, the Thirty-seventh World Health Assembly took a decision to ”spiritual dimension” part and parcel of WHO Member States’ strategies for health (WHO, 1985).
Fourteen years later, the special group of the WHO Executive Board for the review of the Constitution proposed that the preamble be modified to read (WHO,1997): Health is a dynamic state of complete physical, mental, spiritualand social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Mental health describes either a level of cognitive or emotional well-being or an absence of a mental disorder.
from perspectives of the discipline of positive psychology or holism mental health may include an individual’s ability to enjoy life and procure a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.
Mental health is an expression of our emotions and signifies a successful adaptation to a range of demands(Sweeny et al., 1992).
In healthcare, spirituality is identified with experiencing a deep-seated sense of meaning and purpose in life, together with a sense of belonging. It is about acceptance, integration and wholeness.
Spirituality can refer to an ultimate or immaterial reality an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of their being; or the “deepest values and meanings by which people live (Ewert Cousins, 1992).
Religion Indicate specific behavioural social doctrinal characteristics. In particular it involves belief in a supernatural power or transcendent being, truth or ultimate reality and expression of such a belief in behaviour and rituals (Larson et al.,1997).
Religion offer community-based worship, each faith having its own set of beliefs and sacred traditions.
Factors mediating the relationship between spirituality and mental health:
Some of the research exploring the association between spirituality and mental health attempts to understand the mechanisms through which potential benefits may occur.
That is, rather than assuming that effects of spiritual or religious activity reflect the intervention of a divine being or god, other factors may explain and account for those effects.
Mechanisms most often discussed are:
Coping styles
Locus of control
Social support
Physiological mechanisms,
Resilience
Life Satisfaction
The Neuroscience of the spirit:
Social, religious and spiritual beliefs, when practised, can lead to an upgrading of the immune system, with positive changes in brain function and a positive attitude, all of which may contribute to a healthier life and the possibility of an extended lifespan.
There hasbeen positive relationship between better mental health and the followingforgiveness ,physical, psychologicalwellbeing and meditation
