Abstract

This Study Aims At Investingating The Linguistic Varieties Used For Self-Presentation In Computer-Mediated Communicaion By Egyptian University Students what are the linguistic varieties used in text-basedComputer-Mediated Communication(CMC)among Egyptian university students? What are the factors that affect choosing a specific linguistic variety in communicating with others via computer terminals? And what are the linguistic phenomena depictedin Egyptian university students’ use of language online? This study is divided into an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction provides an outline of the study and a summary of the related literature. The first chapter displays a quick overview of the importance of CMCin our daily life, and how language is central to our use and strongly relates to our identity, investigating the main situational and medium factors influencing language use in CMC. The second chapter discusses thesociolinguistic situation and the position of the English language in Egypt, and investigates the linguistic varieties used by Egyptian university students for communication online, namely, Arabic, English, and Latinized Arabic. Egyptian Vuniversity students who studied English as a foreign language prefer to use English in CMC, although they have many linguistic choices. The third chapter handles the linguistic phenomenadepicted in language use for self-presentation in CMC by Egyptian university students. This chapter investigates the phenomena of code-switching and lexical borrowing in CMC. It also investigates theinfluence of using English in CMC by Egyptian university students in the light of ”language contact”. This is achieved through discussing the issues of language combinations in terms of ’Code Switching’, ’Code Mixing’, and ’Lexical Borrowing’.The conclusion displays the findings of this study which point outthat the use of English is highly related to the use of the Internet, and that it greatly affectsthe competence of the group in question in their native language use and practices.
