Abstract

Summary
This work was a prospective cohort study conducted on 72
consecutive patients with S-ICH admitted to the neurovascular units
and/or the ICUs of the Neurology Unit, Neuropsychiatry Department as
well as The Center of Psychiatry, and Neurology, Tanta University
Hospitals in the period from the 1st of December 2016 till the end of
September 2017.
The aim of this work is to study the incidence of hematoma
expansion after primary intracerebral hemorrhage, the predisposing
factors to its occurrence and its effect on patient’s survival and degree
of disability.
Primary ICH was classified regarding the SMASH-U
classification. Included patients were diagnosed on their hospital arrival
using non-contrast CT brain. The study included patients with
parenchymal ICH with or without intraventricular or subarachnoid
extensions as well as pure intraventricular hemorrhage if present.
Exclusion criteria encompassed patients younger than 18 years
old and those with traumatic intracranial hemorrhages, primary
subarachnoid hemorrhages, hemorrhagic transformation of a recent
ischemic stroke as well as hemorrhage inside a space occupying lesion.
Patients who were vitally unstable, died before the follow-up CT, had
contraindications to iodinated IV contrasts as well as those with
subdural or extradural hematomas were also excluded.
This study was carried out on 72 patients with S-ICH submitted
to the following:
1) History taking: Including the personal history and associated
comorbid conditions such as: Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus,
Dyslipidemia, smoking, drug intake, renal and hepatic diseases.
