Abstract

Introduction: Soil improvement techniques using different additives, such as bitumen, bentonite, lime, etc. are considered effective methods to improve soil properties. Nano/Micro kaolin, Nano/Micro ballclay and Metakaolin are considered promising supplementary construction materials which can be used for improving soil properties, especially fine sand. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of mixing fine sand with different materials as Nano/Micro kaolin, Nano/Micro ballclay, Metakaolin, and Bentonite. Different mass percentages of materials (0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0%, 5.0%, 10.0%, 15.0%, and 20.0%) by dry weight of soil were mixed with fine sand (Gamasa sand) to assess their erodibility with time. The PET test was carried out after 25, 50, 75 days of soil mixing. In addition, direct shear test and permeability test were implemented in this study. This thesis tracks in the following order, •Chapter One: Contains an introduction for the thesis including the research objectives.• Chapter Two: Covers the historical background of the materials used in soil improvement, such as Nano / Micro Kaolin, Nano / Micro Bacllay, Metakaolin and Bentonite as well as a literature review of the previous work on the topic.• Chapter Three: This chapter presents the experimental program that was carried out to study the effect of adding various materials such as Nano / Micro Kaolin, Nano / Micro Bacllay, Metakaolin and Bentonite to Gamasa sand. • Chapter Four: This chapter explains the analysis of the results obtained with the Nano/Micro kaolin material with detailed discussion. • Chapter Five: This chapter explains the analysis of the results obtained with the Nano/Micro Ballclay material with detailed discussion.• Chapter Six: •This chapter explains the analysis of the results obtained with the Metakaolin&Bentonite materials with detailed discussion. • Chapter seven: the summary and the general conclusions of the present work were included.
