Abstract

The fingertips are exposed to all aspects of daily living, recreation and work and it is perhaps no surprise they are the most commonly injured part of the hand. Fingertip injuries should not be taken lightly as they can result in significant disability if poorly treated. Variable treatment options are available with much controversy. The evidence in this work shows that both occlusive dressing and V-Y flap are effective methods for treating fingertip injuries. Return to work duration of treatment and follow up are much longer with occlusive dressing than with V-Y flap. Sensory and cosmetic outcomes are better with occlusive dressing than with V-Y flap.
To achieve optimum results and maximum patient satisfaction rates, each method of treatment should be explained in details to every patient in addition to detailed history and careful examination to choose between the conservative and surgical methods.
