Abstract

This study deals with the geology, geochemistry, mineralogy and genesis of the beryl mineralization in the Zabara-Um Addebaa Belt (Z-UD), South Eastern Desert (SED), Egypt. This belt extends about 33 km long and 9km wide covering an area of about 300 km2.
Several products of LANDSAT-8 (an American Earth observation satellite launched on February 11, 2013) digital data such as; principal component (PC2, PC3 and PC4), Band rationing image (6/2, 4/2, 6/7 and 6/5*4/5) and False color composite (7, 5 and 3 in RGB) are generated. Products of images processing improve lithological discrimination spatially of different rock units in Zabara-Um Addebaa belt.
On the basis of detailed field studies and on the geologic setting of the beryl occurrences, the Zabara-Um Addebaa belt can be subdivided into three subareas; Zabara area, Nugrus-Sikait area and Um Addebaa-Um Kabu area. In general, The rock units exposed in Zabara - Um Addebaa belt are: gneiss rocks (oldest), ophiolitic mélange rocks(ultramafic and mafic rocks embedded in mélange matrix (schists)), intrusive rocks (mylonitized granites, peraluminous granites and alkali-feldspar granites) and post granite dykes and veins (basic and felsic dykes as well as pegmatite and quartz veins). The beryliferous zone at Zabara – Um Addebaa belt is confined to the contact between gneisses and schists due to the deep seated zone following the major Nugrus thrust. Several ancient mines were observed at this contact. The beryl occurs either in phlogopite schist or in pegmatite and quartz veins. The good quality of beryl with green grass color (emerald) could be found in phlogopite schist.
