Abstract

Purpose: To compare the botulinum toxin injection effectiveness combined with anterior repositioning splint on the outcome of relieving pain symptoms of tempromandibular disorders.Material and Method: Forty patients diagnosed with tempromandibular disorder symptoms, with chief complaints of clicking, muscle spasm, and limited mouth opening. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups, group I treated with anterior repositioning splint, and group II was treated with botulinum toxin injection beside anterior repositioning splint. Evaluation was done after one, two, and three month(s). The graded chronic pain scale of axis II diagnostic criteria/ tempromandibular disorder used for improvement evaluation. Results: There was a significant difference between the treated groups. Graded chronic pain (GCP) scale was decreased significantly in all groups (p<0.001). Mean initial GCP score in group I was 7.45, and the final score after 1 month was 2.60, and after two months was 1.8, while after 3 months was 1.2. In group II, the mean initial GCP score was 7.25, and the score after one month was 0.85, and after two months was 0.63, while after three months was 0.45 Conclusion: Combined therapy of anterior repositioning splint with botulinum toxin injection improves the results of pain relief, limited mouth opening, and clicking sounds.
