Abstract Introduction: The effect of long-term consumption of fructose on the body and make it vulnerable to diseases, like diabetes. Aim of work: The role of lipoic acid in reducing the effect of prolonged consumption of fructose on the metabolism of carbohydrates in the liver of rats. Materials and methods: This study has been conducted on 40 male albino rats for 4 weeks. Glucose and insulin level, hexokinase activity and HOMA-IR value were estimated. G6PD activity, MDA concentration, SOD activity, nitric oxide concentration, GST activity, GSH level and hydrogen peroxide concentration were estimated as well. The histopathological examination was performed on parts on liver. Results: Increase in glucose level, insulin level and activity of hexokinase enzyme in addition to concentration of MDA, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide. Decrease the level of glucose 6 dihydrogenase enzyme, activity of SOD, activity of GST, and reduced glutathione level under fructose effect. Discussion: Fructose causes a change in the metabolism of carbohydrates and plays a role in the occurrence of insulin resistance syndrome, which lead to diabetes. It also increases oxidative stress in the liver. Lipoic acid is able to reduce fructose-induced changes in carbohydrate metabolism and oxidative stress in the liver. |
