Abstract In conclusion, perioperative anemia and blood transfusion in patients admitted for major joint arthroplasty present with higher prevalence compared to the whole population. Moderate anemia and normocytic normochromic anemia represent the more prevalent classes. Blood transfusion has been found to be over-prescribed and triggered by an Hb concentration less than 10 g/dL. However, other measures could be followed in many cases for correction of anemia, replacing transfusion therapy. So, it’s recommended to develop a PBM program to improve perioperative management of anemia. During performance of this study and literature review, various topics are still vague and controversial urging for future research including: the pathophysiology underlying unexplained anemia of aging, cost-effectiveness of the perioperative use of ESA, and estimation of perioperative blood loss. |
