Abstract

The study presents a research on the material of Calcined clay as a material used in modern civil engineering fields. Three Calcined clay types have been used; Metakaolin MK, Kaolin KA and waste refractory brick. Metakaolin (MK) was Calcined at 600°C. Then, Kaolin (KA) was Calcined in a high temperature of 1000°C. The third type was waste refractory brick recycled by crushing to form an environmentally friendly material. A partial cement or fine aggregate replacement of Portland cement has been made by KA and MK to prepare green concrete mixes. Also a replacement of the fine aggregate was made by KA and MK. Manually crushed recycled refractory brick has been graded to make a partial aggregate replacement. The grading of recycled Calcined refractory brick was made as the same grading of natural aggregates in the study. Setting times and normal consistency of pastes with KA and MK were determined. Workability, compressive strength, tensile splitting and flexural strength were checked against the control concrete mix. The study presents the results of soil sub-base improvement with the three Calcined clay types. Two original soil samples from the surface layer were used. Sandy soil and clayey soil were brought manually. Original soil samples were mixed with different Calcined clay types to form green soil samples. The properties and CBR ratio were measured and a numerical study by ELPLA program was done. The study recommends recycling Calcined clay refractory brick to produce a worthwhile alternative economic and environment friendly green aggregate with due attention to the water requirement. The research also recommends using recycled refractory crushed brick as a green aggregate for producing concrete with recycled materials. The study of the results recommends using recycled refractory brick as a green and economic and environment-improving green material.
