Abstract

Dental caries is a common oral disease affecting preschool children around the world. The prevalence of dental caries has increased in both developed and developing countries in the past decade. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of dental caries and its related factors among pre-school children in Port Said City. Design: A cross sectional descriptive design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: the study was conducted in twelve nursery schools in Port Said city. Sample: random sample was conducted on 598 children. Tools: the data were collected using three tools: Structured Interviewing Questionnaire, Bio physiological measurement chart and dmft of children diagnosis checklist. Results: the results of this study showed that half (50%) of the study group was at the age of 4 years and the other half was at the age of 5 years, three quarters (75%) of the study group had dental caries with total dmft value 3.44±2.7, 60.7% of the study group eat sweets. Conclusion: the study concluded that there was a highly statistical significant difference between those who had dental caries with their sociodemographic data, their knowledge about dental hygiene, their practices, and their eating habits. Recommendations: Regular counseling of mother’s children’s for promoting healthy behaviors of children through dietary counseling and oral hygiene instructions, including tooth brushing at least twice daily.
