Abstract

Antenatal exercises could prevent and limit adverse maternal and fetal morbidities. Aim, to assess knowledge, attitudes and practices of pregnant women regarding antenatal exercises in Damietta city. Subject and Methods, a descriptive design was used to carry out this study: A convenience sample of three hundred and sixty five pregnant women who attended Maternal and Child health care centers was included. Tool of data collection; structured interview developed by researcher to gather information about knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding antenatal exercises. Results, pregnant women had low knowledge about types of antenatal exercises, high knowledge about benefits of antenatal exercises (83.7%) and average knowledge about contra-indications to antenatal exercises. Most had positive attitudes towards antenatal exercises (68.3%) while; there practices were poor with a majority not exercising (41.1%). Low knowledge, feeling tired and business were barriers to practice antenatal exercises. Conclusion includes that Knowledge and practices regarding antenatal exercises among pregnant women attending MCH centers were low while their attitudes were mostly positive. Recommendation: incorporating antenatal exercises benefits, guidelines and contraindications into antenatal counseling.
