Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a common skin condition among adolescents and young adults, that may affected by diet.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary intervention and some natural products in acne vulgaris and xerosis.
Methods: A subjects study was conducted involving 224 participants aged 15 - 25 years. Subjects divided into 2 groups (control and acne patients) to evaluate the effect of some dietary factors, fasting blood glucose and lipid profile in acne. Then, acne patients divided into 3 groups: group I: included patients used formula 1, group II: included patients used formula 2 and group III: included patients having healthy diet. Acne severity, blood lipids profile and fasting blood glucose was determined to study the effect of some natural formulas and healthy diet in patients of AV. The xerosis patients included 30 patients divided into two groups: group I: treated with formula 1 and group II: treated with formula 2.
Results: Statistically significant observed between patient and control group in milk, dairy products, ice cream, chocolate, carbonate drink, caffeine, sweets, potato chips and fast foods consumption. Fasting blood glucose showed significant reduction in control group compared with acne patients. Total cholesterol and TG showed statistically significant decrease in control group compared with acne patients. Acne severity showed a significant reduction in post-treatment than pre-treatment state in all studied patients groups (users of formula 1, formula 2 and healthy diet). Blood lipids profile and fasting blood glucose showed significant reduction in healthy diet group compared to formulas groups. All formulas showed a better improvement in xerosis.
Conclusions: These results indicated that ice cream, chocolate, carbonate drinks, caffeine, sweets, potato chips and fast foods consumption may increase acne severity. Honey, beeswax, turmeric, garlic, chamomile, coconut oils cinnamon oil, thyme oil and oregano oil, as natural products, might have an active in acne vulgaris and xerosis management programs.
