Abstract

Since the prevalence of renal and urological disorders among children in our country is not known, this study was designed to screen the urine of school aged children in Menoufiya governorate by microscopic analysis for detection of silent urine abnormalities among primary school children . Screening was done upon 320 school aged children of both sexes and from two primary schools. Those children were apparently healthy and aged 6-11year.
Initial screening by dipstick urine analysis to detect the presence of urinary abnormalities as ; hematuria ,pyuria, nituria ,proteinuria, glucosuria, bilirubinuria , urobilirubin and ketone in urine. Positive cases in dipstick screening were subjected complete microscopic examination, with cases positive for proteinuria in dipstick were subjected heat and acetic test .
In this study, the prevalence of urinary abnormalities among primary school children by dipstick test was 15% with 9.7% of the studied group had hematuria , 7.5% had leucocytes in urine , 3.1% of the children had turbidity ,2.2% were positive in niturate test and lastely 0.9% had proteinuria .There were no glucose, bilirubin , urobilirubin nor keton bodies detected in urine specimens.
There was a statistically significant difference between children at different age groups regarding prescence of leucocytes in dipstick test as about 12% of +ve children for leucocyte were (6-7)years old, also there was statistically significant difference in Leucocytes by dipstick regarding the mean age of the studied group , as it was positive among children whose mean age 7.75 ±1.62. There was no statistically significant difference between children with different socio-economic status ,gender ,or school type regarding the dipstick result.
