Abstract End-stage renal disease (ESRD) has become a public health concern worldwide as the total number of ESRD patients requiring renal replacement therapy has been growing dramatically. The main problem in developing countries is lack and inaccuracy of data registry. In Sharkia governorate the is no transplant program and hemodialysis represent the main treatment method for ESRD. Although hemodialysis was initiated more than 3 decades in Sharkia governorate there is only one report depicted epidemiological characteristics of 1004 ESRD patients at only 15 dialysis center by Ghonemy et al. in 2016. Sharkia is one of the biggest agricultural governorates in Egypt. Located in the eastern Nile river delta part of the country. Its capital is Zagazig city. This descriptive study had been done in all Sharkia governorate central governmental hospitals on patients with end stage renal disease on maintenance hemodialysis in 21 cities and centers. The total population of Sharkia governorate is about 7,163,824 (on year 2017); out of them 2186 had end stage renal disease on maintenance hemodialysis in central governmental hemodialysis units, 180 ESRD patients in insurance authority hospitals, 102 ESRD patients in university hospital, 85 ESRD patients in educational authority hospital and 614 ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis in private hemodialysis units. The study was done during the period (February 2017 to November 2017). Due to the frequency of renal dialysis (3-times /week),the patients always seek the nearby hemodialysis unit. Therefore these patients almost represent all patients in Sharkia governorate with ESRD on maintenance hemodialysis. The study showed that the prevalence of ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis in Sharkia governorate is 442 pmp and prevalence of ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis in Sharkia central governmental units is 305 pmp. The etiology of ESRD are the following: 1- Hypertension: 30.1 % 2- Undetermined etiology: 19.5% 3- Diabetes mellitus: 17.6 % 4- Recurrent urinary stone: 10.3 % 5- Recurrent urinary tract infection: 8.5 % 6- Drugs: 4.3 % 7- chronic glomerulonephritis: 4.1 % 8- Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: 2.9% 9- Systemic lupus erythematosus: 1.5 % 10- Gout: 1.1 % ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis in Sharkia Central Governmental Units with HCVAb +ve were 44.7 % and patients with HBsAg +ve were 2.2%. |
