Abstract

Aquaculture produces fish and shellfish for markets and has become an important source to meet the food and nutrition security needs of a rapidly expanding human population in Egypt. Viral diseases are difficult to control due to the high susceptibility of aquatic animals to them, limited availability of therapeutics, insufficient knowledge about their pathogenesis and limited information to the natural resistance mechanisms of the aquatic animals. Thus, viruses are the principal pathogens that causing mortality, slow growth and deformations that negatively affecting the economy of aquaculture worldwide. This study was performed to diagnose DNA/RNA viral diseases among marine fishes and shell fishes reared in Egypt through clinicopathological examination and molecular based methods; e.g. RT-PCR and PCR, nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. Our study concluded that, IMNV, IHHNV and WSSV are serious viral diseases affecting shrimp industry while LCDV is one of the viral diseases that affect sea bream as marine fishes where these viruses showed similarities with same recorded viruses in GenBank. These viruses cause serious economic losses due to high mortality and low marketability.
