Abstract

This study is aiming to assess prevalence and configuration of bifid mandibular canal in a sample of Egyptians using Cone Beam Computed Tomography.
Conclusion
1. BMCs occurrence rate detected by CBCT is high in the Egyptian population, with different characteristics, sizes, and morphology.
2. The most observed type of BMC was retromolar canal and this carry an important clinical significance.
3. It is important to analyze the mandibular canals of egyptian patients using CBCT before oral cavity implant placement, third molar extraction, and mandible sagittal osteotomy, to verify the presence and characteristics of BMCs specially when its presence is suspected on panoramic radiography.
4. CBCT is of utmost importance for a reliable and precise detection of this important anatomical variation of the mandibular canal.
5. Cone beam computed tomography guarantees not only the identification of the type of bifid/trifid canal but also the evaluation of their exact shape and course , thus avoiding complications and improving the quality of operations.
