Abstract

Objectives : The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effect of aflatoxin B (AFB) in the diets of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and to examine the detoxification activity of a commercial anti-mycotoxin ARCAVIT Bioacid Forte. Methods & Results: Sixty fish were chosen with an average initial weight of about 40 g then the chosen fish were redistributed randomly into three treatments in six glass aquaria (30 x 60 x 40cm), each treatment was applied in two aquaria (replicates). The aflatoxcosis symptoms reflected bad appearance, post-mortem, growth performance, internal organs indices, feed and nutrients utilization, blood picture, body composition, muscles properties, and liver histology. However, ARCAVIT alleviated these symptoms to some extent. Conclusion: Aflatoxin B is very toxic, even at a low concentration as 5 ppb (ng/g), for Nile tilapia. It threat fish morphology, gross pathology, liver histology, growth performance and internal organs indices, feed utilization, body composition and properties, as well as blood chemistry. Moreover, the anti-toxic agent at the tested level did not completely overcome the aflatoxicity symptoms. That leads to keep the old wisdom ”PROPHYLAXIS IS MORE BETTER THAN CURING”.
