Abstract In mathematical physics, Minkowski space or Minkowski space- time is a combination of Euclidean space and time into a four- dimensional manifold, where a space-time is a connected time- oriented four-dimensional Lorentz manifold. Hermann Minkowski (1864-1909) found that the theory of special relativity, introduced by his former student Albert Einstein, could be understood as a four-dimensional space, since known as the Minkowski space- time. In modern physics (especially general relativity), space-time is represented by a Lorentzian manifold. Minkowski space-time is a simple example of a Lorentzian manifold. Lorentzian geom- etry plays an important role in that transition between modern differential geometry and mathematical physics. |
