Abstract

In the present study the general characteristics of the salivary glands, are similar within the different species of pulmonates with a little differences in the number of cell types. E. vermiculata have Four histochemically different cell types, while two types of cells were observed in B. alexandrina. Like in numerous pulmonate gastropods in both E. vermiculata and B. alexandrina, the albumen gland is composed of tubules consisting of two cell types, that has an almost identical histological appearance. The mucous glands of E. vermiculata, is very similar to that in Helicoidea species (Helix aspersa and Cepaea nemoralis). In addition to mucus examination of E. vermiculata which was submitted to SDS-PAGE, only one major dominant protein band was observed with molecular mass of ~ 250 kDa, where MASCOT analysis of this protein showed good matches with haemocyanin of Aplysia californica, Megathura crenulata and Helix pomatia.
