Abstract

Internship programs designed to assist nurse interns to practice their skills and apply their knowledge under supervision of expert nurse, but this is difficult in a busy environment and lacking suitable role models. So, nurse preceptors’ have a critical role in nurse interns’ transition to be competent nurses. Aim of the study: study the nurse preceptors’ role during internship year in nursing. Method: The study was conducted at Tanta University Hospitals and Alexandria University Hospitals. The study subjects included all (50) clinical nurse specialists and (100 available nurse interns at Tanta University Hospital. All (58) nurse preceptors and (100) available nurse interns at Alexandria University Hospital. Two tools were used to collect data, tool (I) Nurse Preceptors’Self-Evaluation Questionnaire, Tool (II) Nurse Interns’ Perception of Nurse Preceptors’ Role Questionnaire. Results and conclusion: Majority of Tanta University nurse interns had low perception level regarding preceptors’ role. High percent of them had low level of perception regarding clinical, teaching and communication skills of preceptor, as well as perceived role as a preceptor and personality traits. More than fifty of Tanta University clinical nurse specialists had high level of perception regarding preceptors’ role including management skills, perceived role as a preceptor and personality traits. Less than two thirds of Alexandria University nurse interns had low level of perception regarding preceptors’role. High percent of them had low level of perception regarding teaching,communication and management skills of preceptor. More than fifty of Alexandria University nurse preceptors had high level of perception regarding preceptors’ role. High percent of them had high level of perception regarding clinical skills, perceived role as a preceptor, and communication skills. Recommendation: structured preceptorship program should be designed to provide effective preceptors. Job description for the preceptors should be developed to clearify their roles and responsibilities.
