Abstract

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that is globally widespread and infects man and animals. This study was done for studying the effect of Toxoplasma gondii infection on male fertility of experimental animals we investigated some male reproductive parameters (sperm motility, viability and morphology of male rats experimentally infected by T.gondii. about 0.5 ml of the aspirated peritoneal exudates containing (2 x 106) tachyzoites ( RH strain : type 1 ) was inoculated through the subcutaneous route into each rat of the 35 healthy adult male Wistar rats, while 14 male rats were used as controls.
On days 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 post-inoculation (p.i.) 5 rats from infected group and 2 rats from control group were anesthetized. The body weight of each animal was recorded, testes were immediately removed, weighed and semen evaluation from left cauda epididymis was undertaken. We also measured Serum testosterone and serum LDH. We removed right testis and prepared tissue homogenate for estimation of intratesticular testosterone (ITT) and intratesticular lactate dehydrogenase (ITLDH). Left testis for testicular histopathology.
We found that there was no difference between T. gondii infected group and control group during the 70 days P.I. in testes/body weight throughout the period.
As regard sperm parameters live/dead sperms was statistically lower among T. gondii infected group by days 30 , 40, 50, 60 and 70 P.I., and in general live/dead sperms decreased in T. gondii infected group throughout the 70 days P.I.
Sperm motility was statistically lower among T. gondii infected group by days 40, 60 and 70 P.I., and in general that sperm motility decreased in T. gondii infected group throughout the 70 days P.I. Sperm abnormality was statistically higher among T. gondii infected group by days 30, 40, 60 and 70 P.I., and in general abnormal sperms form increased in T. gondii infected group throughout the 70 days P.I.
As regard results of hormonal assays serum and tissue testosterone level was statistically lower among T. gondii infected throughout the 70 days P.I. especially on days 60, 70 P.I.
Serum and tissue LDH level was statistically higher among T. gondii infected throughout the 70 days P.I. especially on days 60, 70 P.I.
Some pathological features in testes of T. gondii infected group were found.
