Abstract

This study aimed to assess CD19 and CD24 expression in beta thalassemia major and iron deficiency anemia, and to evaluate their association with different demographic and laboratory data, as well as their relation to disease out come.
Subjects were classified into:
group I: It included 30 beta thalassemia major children
This group was divided into two subgroups:
- group Ia: 15 patients with chelation therapy.
- group Ib: 15 patients without chelation therapy.
group II: It included 30 iron deficiency anemia children.
This group was divided into two subgroups:
- group IIa: 15 patients under treatment.
- group IIb: 15 newly diagnosed patients.
group III (Control group): It included 30 healthy controls.
All subjects included in the study were subjected to the following:
1-Complete history taking.
2- Clinical examination .
3-Laboratory Investigations:
A-Routine investigations:
 Complete blood count (CBC).
 Prothrombin concentration.
 Renal function tests.
 Liver function tests.
 Haemoglobin electrophoresis.
 Serum iron, serum ferritin and total iron binding capacity.
B-Special:
CD 19 and CD24 by flow cytometry.
As regarding comparison between group I , group II and group III it was found that :
 Significant decrease in HB level in group I when compared to group II.
 Significant increase in AST, ALT, DB, TB, S.iron and S.ferritin in group I when compared to group II.
 Significant increase in DB, TB, S.iron and S.ferritin in group I when compared to group III.
 Increase in CD19 and CD24 percentage in group I and group II compared to group III.
 Increase in CD24 percentage in group II when compared to group I .
 No significant difference in TLC, platelets count, lymphocytes count and albumin level.
As regarding comparison between subgroups of group I (Ia and Ib) it was found that :
 No significant difference in lymphocytes count and TIBC.
 There was significant decrease in HB level in group Ia than groupIb.
 There was significant increase in S.iron and S.ferritin in group Ia than groupIb.
As regarding comparison between subgroups of group II (IIa and IIb) it was found that :
 No significant differenc in HB level, lymphocytes count, S.iron, S.ferritin and TIBC.
As regarding comparison between subgroups it was found that :
 CD19 and CD24 are more increased in group IIa when compared to other sub groups.
As regarding Correlation between CD19 and other studied data in group I (Ia-Ib) and group II (IIa-IIb):
 There was no significant correlations between CD19 and HB level and S.ferritin In group I (Ia-Ib) and group II (IIa and IIb).
As regarding Correlation between CD24 and other studied data in
group I (Ia-Ib) and group II (IIa-IIb):
 There was significant positive correlation between CD24 and S.ferritin in groupIa and Ib.
 There was significant negative correlation between CD24 and HB level in groupIa and Ib.
 There was no significant correlation between CD24 and HB level and S.ferritin in group IIa and IIb.
