Abstract

Disseminated intravascular coagulation is a bleeding disorder characterized by two seemingly opposite conditions: uncontrolled bleeding, simultaneous with uncontrolled clotting.
Sepsis is the most frequent cause of DIC in the neonate
The aim of this study was to detect the prevalence of DIC in neonates with sepis .
This study was carried out on 81 septic neonate in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Minia maternity and children University hospital over a period of 6 months from Januaray to June 2017.
The studied neonates were subjected to thorough clinical examination streesing on signs of neonatal sepsis and signs of DIC in addition to investigations including CBC, liver function test, renal function test, coagulation profile, fibrin fegradation products.
As regard the results of the current study, from our 81 studied septic neonates, we found that 32(39.5%) septic neonates suffered from DIC. there were 52 (64.2%) Male and 29 (35.8%) female, 31(38.3%) preterm and 50(61.7%) fullterm neonate, 28 (34.5%) neonate with early onset sepsis and 53(65.5%) with late onset.
We found that presence of bloody stool, bleeding from puncture site and brownish gastric aspirate were significant predictors of DIC.
from our study , we can conclude that Neonatal sepsis is the most common cause of DIC which should be carefully monitored.
Early screening of DIC in high risk neonate should be a routine work in NICUs.
