Abstract

The technology of Wireless power transfer (WPT) has attracted a considerable attention recently due to the increasing demand of wireless applications such as portable electronic devices, biomedical implants, and wireless buried sensors. WPT technology can be found also in contactless radio-frequency identification (RFID), and remote charging of electrical vehicles. Most of the short-range WPT systems depend upon the magnetic resonant coupling using 3-D wire loops, or helical antennas which are often bulky in geometry. Thus, there are technical obstacles to be applied to small electronic devices and biomedical implants. Recently to get compact structures, the defected ground structures (DGS) have emerged as a candidate for low-profile WPT system. The main advantage of the DGS WPT system is the feeding topology, where the power is transferred from/to the main TX/RX resonators by electrical coupling.
In this work, a new compact WPT system is proposed. This system is used for short-range WPT using two compact size folded U-slot resonators with a pair of coupled lines folded inside resonator and interdigital capacitors through an electromagnetic resonant coupling. This proposed design enables us to achieve power transfer efficiency of 77.6% with separating distance between resonators of 10 mm and operates at 1 GHz. Simulation results and theoretical studies have shown good agreement with the measurements.
