Abstract

Certain specific benign breast disorders are associated with a clinically relevant increased risk of subsequent development of breast cancer. Atypical lobular and atypical ductal hyperplasia (ALH and ADH, respectively) are both associated with an absolute risk of the development of breast cancer over 10 to 15 years of approximately 10 %.
Columnar cell lesions (CCLs) are classified as that four categories:
1- Columnar cell change.
2- Columnar cell hyperplasia.
3- Columnar cell change with atypia.
4- Columnar cell hyperplasia with atypia.
The collective term “flat epithelial atypia” (FEA) to describe the latter two categories.
In our study all 71 patients had modified radical mastectomy for previously diagnosed breast cancer, all mastectomy specimens were subjected to pathological examination to detect premalignant lesions associated with the malignant tumor.
As regards age our sample included 6 (8.5%) patients under the age of 35 years, 30 (42.3%) patients between 35 and 50 years and 35 (49.3%) patients more than 50 years, the mean age was 51 years.
Flat epithelial atypia FEA was found in 39 patients 15%, the mean age that FEA was found is 45.9 years.
FEA was found in 35 patients with invasive duct carcinoma IDC, 5 patients had FEA with invasive lobular carcinoma ILC, with 2 patients with mucinous and tubular tumor and one patient for both medullary and micropapillary tumor.
