Abstract

Neonatal septicaemia remains a major cause of morbidity and
mortality in the neonatal period.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic value of resistin in
neonatal sepsis, and to compare this adipocytokine with highly sensitive
C-reactive protein (hs-CRP).
In the present study, 60 infants with neonatal sepsis were
consecutively enrolled from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of
”Menoufia University Hospital” and ”Benha Children Hospital” from
February to November 2017. In addition, 30 healthy neonates without
history of prolonged rupture of the membranes served as a control group.
The study protocol was approved by the Menoufia Faculty of Medicine
Committee for Medical Research Ethics.
Infants were thoroughly evaluated clinically. Resistin and routinely
available sepsis markers, including hs-CRP, WBC, ANC, platelets count,
I/T ratio, NLR ratio, and RDW were measured within 2 hours of NICU
admission. Microbiological cultures were taken upon admission from
potential sources of infection. Resistin and the other markers were also
measured to all infants in the control group. The clinical condition was
closely monitored and the primary outcome was in- hospital 30-day
mortality.
