Abstract

Schistosomiasis is a major and severe neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. Praziquantel (PZQ) is a chemotherapy based on repeated doses is still the most effective control strategy against schistosomiasis. PZQ is currently the drug of choice for the treatment of schistosomiasis. The results showed a significant effect in improving the tissue of both liver and testicular in infected mice when treated with Arabic gum (AG) in combination with PZQ. This has been demonstrated by the use of various parasitological, immunohistochemical, genetic and molecular techniques. The present data recorded reduction in worm count, egg number and granuloma diameter. Also, combined treatment with AG and PZQ showed a marked improvement in the value of DNA damage when measuring the programmed death rate (apoptosis) of cells in both liver and testes tissue using DNA electrophoresis and cell cycle distribution analysis (flow cytometry). It can be concluded from this study that some natural products such as AG can be used as an additive with PZQ to improve damage caused by schistosomiasis.
