Abstract

Epilepsy is considered between the most serious and well-known neurological disorders in children. Epileptic seizure occurs due to abnormal hypersynchronus or excessive neuronal activity in brain. It is commonly now recognized that a subset of children with epilepsy will show some grade of cognitive impairment; additionally, there is established a relationship between epilepsy and cognitive deficits. Cognitive dysfunction has been associated to interactions among continuing seizures, subclinical epileptogenic discharges, different epileptic syndromes, psychosocial issues, underlying reasons of symptomatic epilepsy, and treatment with antiepileptic drugs. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the effect of the most commonly used anti-epileptics drugs for example (Sodium Valproate, Carbamazepine and Levetiracetam) on platelets number and function. The utilization of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is frequently connected with adverse effects (AEs) for example idiosyncratic reactions, dose- associated neurocognitive consequences, and problems of long-standing utilize. Commonly occurring side-effects of AEDs are memory problems, fatigue, tremors, gastrointestinal symptoms, osteoporosis, depression, drowsiness, dizziness, weight change, nausea, etc. In This study, No significant difference was detected between the three used drugs at different time in the study in concern of platelets function of the studied patients according to drugs used, in spite of : significant difference was detected in each drug category between the different samples. In the Valproate sodium group: the mean level of the platelets function shows significant reduction. In the carbamazepine group: the mean level of the platelets function shows significant reduction. In the Levetiracetam group: the mean level of the platelets function shows significant reduction in the third sample which is 68.46. In This study, No significant difference was detected between the three used drugs at different time in the study in concern of platelets count of the studied patients according to drugs used, in spite of : significant difference was detected in each drug category between the different samples. Conclusion: Epilepsy is considered between the most serious and well-known neurological disorders in children. Antiepileptic drugs have hematological side effects as they can affect platelets count and function.
