Abstract

The use of photovoltaic (PV) system as a safe and clean source of energy from the sun has been rapidly increasing. The PV systems can enhance the operation of power systems by improving the voltage profile, reducing the power losses of distribution systems and mitigating harmonics. In comparison with other renewable technologies, PV systems still face major difficulties and may pose some adverse effects to the system, such as harmonic pollution.
In this thesis, ETAP is presented as a proposed procedure to choice the optimal design of single tuned filters that able to reduce the effects of voltage and current harmonic contents to be within the accepted practical limits. Two proposed filter design strategies are presented. The first one considers the power factor correction as the primary objective function while the minimization of total installing costs is considered as a primary objective function in the second strategy. An actual part of residential distribution systems as a real application of Egyptian network is implemented to explain the capability of the proposed procedure to improve the power quality and to reduce the total and individual voltage and current harmonic contents to be within their accepted limits according to the Egyptian code.
In this thesis, a meta-heuristic algorithm as harmony search algorithm (HSA) is used to select the perfect place to locate a photovoltaic system (PV) in distribution system according to losses reduction and voltage improvement of the system. Electrical Transient Analyzer Program (ETAP) is used for finding the influence of locating PV system in the place, which is chosen by HSA on the network harmonics. Before the PV is located, single tuned filters are used for mitigating and cleaning the distribution system from any harmonics. After the PV is located, many filters are used for mitigating harmonics that are results from PV penetration. This algorithm is applied to the Egyptian East Delta Network (EDN) and IEEE 33-bus distribution system. Filters are optimal designed using ETAP. However, the total and individual harmonics distortion must be within Egyptian and IEEE standards limits. Filters are sized according to initial cost minimization.
