Abstract

Joint replacement (arthroplasty) is effective widely performed treatment that leads to improvement in function, pain, performance in activities of daily living, and quality of life in the oldest patients (Linsell et al., 2016).
After successful THR surgery, patient will have significant improvement of quality of life in terms of physical, psychosocial and spiritual health (Greene, 2017).
Aim of the Study
This study was carried out to assess quality of life for older adult post hip joint replacement through:
• Recognizing older adult knowledge about hip joint replacement.
• Assessing older adult practices regarding hip joint replacement.
• Assessing older adult quality of life (physical, social and psychological domains) post hip replacement.
Research questions
1) Is there a relation between older adult’s socio-demographic characteristics and their knowledge post hip joint replacement?
2) Is there a relation between older adult’s socio-demographic characteristics and their practice post hip joint replacement?
3) Is there a relation between older adult’s knowledge and their QOL?
4) Is there a relation between older adult’s practice and their QOL?
Methodology:
Research design:
A descriptive design was used in this study.
Setting
The study was conducted in outpatient orthopedic clinic at El-Helal Hospital, Egypt.
Subjects
Purposive sample composed of 172 clients who attending in outpatient orthopedic clinic at the previous mentioned setting.
Inclusion Criteria:
• Older adult from both genders
• Primary hip joint replacement
• Ages ranged from 60-75 years old
Tools of data collection
Data collected through used the following tools:
The first Tool: An interviewing Questionnaire; it was consisted of four parts:
Part 1:
It was concerned with the older adult’s socio-demographic characteristics.
Part 2:
It was concerned with the older adult’s medical history past, present & family history.
Part 3:
It was concerned with older adult’s knowledge regarding hip joint replacement operation.
Part 4:
It was concerned with older adult’s practices post hip joint replacement.
The second tool: Quality of Life: this tool was adapted from (Health Survey – SF-36, World Health Organization, Quality of Life – (WHO QOL, 2009) and modified by the investigator which included:
