Abstract

The primary objective of the present work is to compare polymeric nanofibers fabricated using electrospining technique for development of transdermal fiberous mats that can be used in protection against dermal dermatitis by employing natural honey as an antimicrobial agent. Manuka honey (MH) was successfully implemented to produce functional nanofibers using nylon6 , polyurethane and polycaprolactone as a matrix. The effect of honey inclusion on fiber diameter was invistegated and it was found that as honey percentage increases fiber diameter increases – Nonetheless, honey had no specific effect on the mechanical or bursting strength of the produced mats. Nanofibers incorporating more than 50% honey revealed a good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli . Nylon6/honey nano-mats had higher antibacterial potency compared to Polyurethane/honey mats containing the same honey ratio. None of the honey loaded fiberous mats had a heamolytic effect which suggests the posibility of usage as a protectetive top sheet layer against diaper rash.
