Abstract

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) characterized by persistent
albuminuria which is the main complication of diabetes mellitus and has become the important cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide.
Microalbuminuria is thought to be an early marker of DN in clinical practice. However, emerging evidences suggested that glomerular damage also presented in diabetic patients with norm- albuminuria who might be lost if diagnosis is only dependent on microalbuminuria.
Podocalyxin (PCX) is the main surface antigen of podocytes which may be separated in urine during course of DN.
The aim of this study is to investigate urinary podocalyxin as a useful marker for early detection of glomerular dysfunction in type 2 diabetic nephropathy.
The present study was conducted at the Clinical pathology and Internal medicine departments of Menoufia University Hospitals from September 2017 to June 2018 on 66 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from in and out patient’s clinics of Internal medicine department and 20 apparently healthy subjects serving as control group (GI).
Patients were further subclassified according to their microalbumin/creatinine ratio into three groups: normoalbuminuric diabetic group (GII).This group include 22 patients(8 males and 14 females), microalbuminuric diabetic group (GIII).This group include 22 patients(11 males and 11 females) and macroalbuminuric diabetic group (GIV).This group include 22 patients(9 males and 13 females).
