Abstract

This study aimed to assess nutritional rehabilitation guideline for hemodialysis patients in Benha City. Research design: Descriptive analytical research design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: The study was conducted at the Dialysis Unit affiliated to Benha University Hospital. The Sample: A convenient sample of 62 hemodialysis patients was used in this study. Tools: Three tools (1): A structured interviewing questionnaire to assess the socio- demographic characteristics: data related to patients, data related to past and present history of the disease, data related to the results of laboratory measurement. (2): Knowledge about disease, healthy nutrition, nutritional assessment form: Used to assess nutritional status of hemodialysis patients, factors affecting nutritional status for hemodialysis patients. (3): An observation checklist designed to measure the following: Data related to home environment, and assess physical condition of patient’s pre, during and post dialysis session. The Results: 74.19% of the studied subjects were male, 54.84% of them were cannot read or write, 61.29% of the studied subjects reside in urban areas, 56.5% of the studied subjects had average knowledge about the disease, and also 37.4% of them had good knowledge about the disease. 43.5% of the studied subjects had good knowledge about the nutrition. There were no statistically significant relation between the hemodialysis patients’ socio demographic characteristics and their knowledge. Conclusion: The present study shows the most of the hemodialysis patients had physical, psychological, religious, economic and social factors that effect on the nutritional condition of them. Recommendations: The developed simplified and comprehensive Arabic booklet that including information about renal failure disease and the importance of the nutritional rehabilitation should be made available on the hemodialysis units in hospitals.
