Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the challenges and difficulties that faced EFL teachers in large classes. To reach the aim of this study, four EFL teachers were interviewed to generate actual or experienced data about large classes by asking the interviewees to talk about their experiences, and opinions in teaching. The study was conducted at Minti governmental primary school that included large classes in Shubra in Egypt. All the participants had around 8-10 years of experience in the field of teaching. The researcher used questionnaires, interviews, group reflection discussion and an observation card to collect data for the current study. The investigation was conducted at the beginning of the second term of the academic year 2016-2017. The data showed that both teachers and pupils faced many problems related to many factors. Teachers believe that class size has a great impact on the educational process. It had been highlighted in this study that there were many barriers and difficulties affected teachers’ teaching and pupils’ learning, especially with regard to the discipline problems, which most teachers in large classes would face. The study findings shed the light on some useful prospects and effective suggestions to be applied in large classes, which may facilitate the language teaching and learning.
