Abstract

The ability to write English medical articles is one of the key skills needed for professionals in the medical field. The aim of this research therefore is to guide medical practitioners to write correct sentence structure in medical English, which is a pre-requisite for publishing medical articles. This research deals with analyzing the syntax of 5 medical articles by applying Maglie`s model (2009), Maglie is one of the modern researchers in the field of syntactic analysis of medical articles. After analyzing the 5 medical articles according to Maglie`s (2009) model, it has been found that Egyptian professionals fail to follow four syntactic features in their writing. These four syntactic features are omission of phrasal elements, expressive conciseness and pre-modification, use of verb tenses and nominalization. Suggestions for the misuse of the features she puts forth are given. Calculation of the percentage of items correctly and incorrectly used following the rules of the syntactic features mentioned in Maglie`s model is done through the “Statistical Package for the Social Sciences” (SPSS). As a result, the researcher suggests some methodologies that may help them write correct medical English.
