Abstract

Adenomyosis and Leiomyoma are common disorders affecting females in their reproductive age. They mimic each other in clinical presentation. Due to similarities in clinical symptoms and signs, missing one diagnosis in favor of the other is common. Accurate diagnosis of these two conditions is important for their management. In this study we evaluated role of 3D Ultrasound and Doppler in differentiating clinically suspected cases of leiomyoma and adenomyosis of uterus. The study results showed that 3D ultrasound criteria used for diagnosing adenomyosis and leiomyoma of uterus have good sensitivity, specificity and high positive predictive value, negative predictive value and overall good diagnostic accuracy rate. The Doppler criteria could increase the accuracy of imaging in diagnosing and differentiating leiomyoma of uterus from adenomyosis. The examination is quick, accurate and reproducible with high diagnostic accuracy which makes differential diagnosis between these conditions easy, avoiding more time consuming and more expensive investigations like MRI,and the results were confirmed with histopathology that showed confirmatory and strengthens of imaging results.
