Abstract

Egypt is one of the important sources of Medicinal and Aromatic plant products in the world. The medicinal and aromatic plants are exposed to contamination problems which caused low quality and high microbial load during harvest or post-harvest treatments. So, advise to drying without damage, sterilization, right packaging and good storage. Thus this work was performed to investigate modern sreilization method which have safe and ecofreindely and with high efficiency quality of medicinal and aromatic plants. In this work, three types of light used for caraway fruits sterilization were heliunm-neon (He-Ne) green laser at wavelength 543.5 nm, helium-neon (He-Ne) red laser at wavelength 632.8 nm and ultraviolet ( UV ) light at wavelength 245 nm, with exposure times ( 1 min., 3 min., 5 min., 10 min. and 15 min.) and study the effect for type of radiation, exposure time and their interaction on caraway fruits. Physical properties ( length- width- thickness- volume- geometric diamter, arithmetic diameter – frontal area- transverse area - sphericity- correlation between length/ width- length/ thicknesswidth/thickness- frontal area/ transverse area- frontal area/sphericity - transverse area/ sphericity- geometric diameter/ arithmetic diameter- geometric diameter/ sphericity- arithmetic diameter/ sphericity), germination percentage (germination ٪- germination speed), moisture percentage (٪) were performed. Also, essential oil(percentage – constituents) and microbiological (total count icroorganisms- fungi- sporeformer bacteria) were studied. Moreover, miniral nutrients (nitrogen- potassium- phosphoruosecalsium-sodium)( g/100g ) were analyzed. Furthermore, pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoid) were performed. Meanwhile, concerning pigments, there was an observable significant decrement in chlorophyll a, in sterilization treatment by heliumneon green laser, while sterilization treatments recorded significant increase in chlorophyll b. Also, the results recorded that significant increase in carotenoid percent with sterilization by UV radiation. Finally, we recommend using sterilization by helium-neon green at 10 min. in order to eliminate the microbial load. the sterilization treatment by helium-neon ( 543.5 nm & 632.8 nm) and ultraviolet recorded the controlling on microbial load, this means extended period of preservation. It was considred eco-friendly and safe method.
