Abstract

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of thymus vulgaris (watery and alcoholic) extract and prebiotic (Nutricell-MOS®), given for 30 successive days on broiler chickens. The effect was tested on growth performance parameters (body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion ratio). Their effects on some hemato-biochemical parameters as well as its antioxidant effect.
Experimental design: Two hundred one day old unsexed Cubb broiler chicks were used in this investigation and classified into 4 equal groups.
Two blood samples were collected from their wing vein from each bird at 1st and 7th day post-supplementation in all groups. 1st samples for determination of some haematological studies collected in test tube containing EDTA. Second blood samples for determination of some biochemical parameters. Samples for histopathological examination from intestine, liver, kidney and bursa of Fabricius were immediately collected from the slaughtered birds at the 1st and 7th day post- supplementation.
1-Effect of Thymus vulgaris and prebiotic on body performance: non-supplemented broiler chickens. 2- Effect of Thymus vulgaris and prebiotic on blood picture:
All over the experimental period, beside highly significant increase in total leukocytic count at 1st days post administration coupled with insignificant elevation at 7th day post administration when compared with control broiler chickens. 3- Effect of Thymus vulgaris and prebiotic on liver function: Liver enzyme: Prebiotic induced non-significant effect on alanine amino transferase coupled with significant increase in aspartate amino transferase and alkaline phosphatase. Protein picture: Healthy broiler chickens received Thymus vulgaris extract and prebiotic each alone induced significant increase in total protein, highly significant increase in albumin and globulin at 1st and 7th day post supplementation and insignificant increase in albumin, while induced insignificant decrease in albumin globulin ratio in broiler chickens all over experimental period. 4- Effect of Thymus vulgaris and prebiotic on kidney function: All over the experimental period when compared with control broiler chickens. 5- Effect of Thymus vulgaris and prebiotic on antioxidant: Highly significant increase in superoxide dismutase at 1st and significant increase at 7th post supplementation, Beside highly significant decrease in malonodi-aldehyde at 1st day and significant decrease at 7th post supplementation. 6- Effect of Thymus vulgaris and prebiotic on lipid profile: Significant reduction in serum total lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride at 1st days with insignificant reduction at 7th day. 7- Effect of Thymus vulgaris and prebiotic on histopathology: Supplementation of Thymus vulgaris extract orally and prebiotic in drinking water each alone induce mild changes in intestine, spleen, bursa of fabricious and kidney.
