Abstract

Drug use is defined as the use for non-medical or non-scientific purposes of: classical psychoactive drugs, new psychoactive drugs and volatile substances. Substance use disorder (SUD) is mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of one or more psychoactive substances. They include a wide variety of disorders of different severity and clinical forms, such as dependence syndrome, harmful use, intoxication, withdrawal syndrome and psychotic disorder. The consequences of untreated drug abuse are great and include increased risk of disease, injury, disability, and death. It also costs hundreds of billions of dollars to the criminal justice, social welfare, and health care systems.
The aim of the current study was to identify the services provided to the substance abusers, reveal the sociodemographic characteristics of the studied substance abusers, reveal medical and substance abuse profiles, identify the social determinants of substance abuse, and to assess the satisfaction of both the studied abusers and the service providers regarding the services provided by the Hospital.
For fulfillment of this aim, the Addiction Treatment Center manager was interviewed once to describe the services provided by El-Maamoura Psychiatric Hospital. A retrospective survey was carried out on medical records of substance abusers who attended El -Maamoura Psychiatric Hospital for the first time during the year 2016. These records were reviewed by the investigator to collect data of attendees regarding sociodemographic characteristics, medical and substance abuse profile. Also, a cross sectional survey was conducted where substance abusers who attended the outpatient clinics during the three months period of field work were interviewed once by the interviewer to complete the patient satisfaction sheet and to identify the social determinants of substance abuse. A total of 20 physicians were interviewed to reveal their satisfaction regarding the services provided by the Hospital.
The results of this study are presented in four parts namely:
Part A: Description of the services provided to the substance abusers in El- Maamoura Psychiatric Hospital
The services provided to substance abusers by the Hospital included; substance intake assessment, treatment, detoxification, rehabilitation, discharge plan, after care/continuing care and referral. The Hospital follows the following therapeutic approaches; counselling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), anger management and 12 -step model for drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
However some services were lacking like; screening for tobacco use, outreach services for persons in the community who may need treatment, transportation assistance for treatment, smoking cessation counselling, child care for clients’ children or residential beds for clients ’children and methadone maintenance programme.
