Abstract

Professional practice environment constitutes an important factor for nurses’ job satisfaction and their retention. Also retention of nurses and their job satisfaction are important factors in the stability of health care system worldwide to balance the anticipated variance in the supply and demand of nurses and to provide high quality patient’s care. So the practice environment that includes such characteristics as autonomy in decision-making and control over the work’s conditions, valuing nursing in the hospital and mutual respect in relationships between nurses and physicians, staffing and resource adequacy, management’ support for nursing staff enhances nurses’ job satisfaction and their retention. The present study aimed to assess nurse’s perception of nursing professional practice environment in relation to their job satisfaction and retention through the following objectives; assessing nursing professional practice environment as perceived by nurses, determining job satisfaction’ level among nurses at Benha University Hospital, measuring nurses’ retention at their current jobs at hospital, identifying contributing factors to nurses’ retention, determining relationship among nursing professional practice environment, nurses’ job satisfaction and their retention. Subjects and Methods Research design: Descriptive research design was used in carrying out this study The study was carried out in all inpatient’s units of medical, surgical departments and critical care units at Benha University Hospital.
