Abstract Background: Road traffic accidents represent an escalating world health problem. In 2017, road traffic accidents have risen – according to WHO - to become the 10th leading cause of death globally. More than 1.2 million people die each year on the world’s roads and this can largely be prevented. Egypt loses one live every 50 minutes solely due to road traffic accidents costing the country estimated annual losses of about 30 billion Egyptian pounds. Patients and Methods: This prospective study aimed at providing reliable data on epidemiology and management of road traffic accidents presenting to El-Demerdash hospital as a representative sample. Results: By examining cases of road traffic accidents presented to Ain Shams University hospital (El-Demerdash) in a period of 6 months, we found that 2610 of RTA cases were presented to the ER. 77.1% of them were males and 22.9% were females. The mean age of RTA victims was 27.6 years old. 461 of them were admitted. Most cases were admitted for orthopedic fractures. 207 cases of them had either emergency, urgent or scheduled surgeries. 27 of them had multiple surgeries. 11 cases had eventually developed a permanent disability. The study recorded 41 fatalities. Conclusion: Road traffic accidents are a major health problem and a major cause of death in Egypt. Reliable data sources are sometimes lacking in many aspects. Most cases of hospital admission due to road traffic accidents were for orthopedic fractures. Recommendations: More efforts must be exerted to update and digitize trauma registry to make Egyptian roads safer and Egyptian hospitals more capable of dealing with these types of injuries. |
