Abstract

The rapid development of the clinical biology over the past few decades has revealed large number of immune- mediated diseases that are due to aberrant immune responses. Understanding of the immune response that drives the development and persistence of the immune- mediated diseases has, in turn, led to understand the ways in which biologic response modifiers may interact with immune system. This treatment targets specific components of the immune system. This line of treatment will be more potent and specific immune- modulation avoiding the unwanted effects of over immune suppression or stimulation.
Biological therapy is treatment designed to stimulate or restore the ability of the body’s immune (natural internal defense) system to fight infection and disease. This is a form of treatment that uses portions of the body’s natural immune system to treat a disease and is also used to protect the body from some of the side effects of certain treatments.
Biological therapy often involves the use of substances called biological response modifiers (BRMs). The body normally produces these substances in small amounts in response to infection and disease. Using modern laboratory techniques, scientists can produce BRMs in large amounts using recombinant DNA techniques.
The most commonly used biological agent has been insulin. Also, many biological response modifiers have been commonly used in immuno- mediated diseases like Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis which designed to inhibit immune responses.
